Common questions

Can the employer refuse me unpaid leave?
Yes. Unlike paid annual leave, unpaid leave is granted at the employer's discretion. That is why the application gives a reason and says who will cover your work — those are what make it more likely to be granted.
Does unpaid leave count towards length of service?
Up to a certain number of days a year it counts towards length of service and insurance, and beyond that it does not. The threshold is set by law and does change, so check the current figure before asking for a long period.
Do I keep my health insurance?
On a long period of unpaid leave the contributions may fall on you. That is the most commonly overlooked consequence — check how it stands for the period you are asking for before it starts.
Can I come back early?
In principle yes, by mutual agreement. Write into the application that you will return early if the reason falls away — that way the return is foreseen rather than a surprise to an employer who has already redistributed the work.
