Claim to a childcare place: nursery or all-day primary care (Germany)
The letter to the local youth welfare office (Jugendamt) by which parents in Germany claim their child's right to a childcare place under § 24 of Book VIII of the German Social Code (SGB VIII): a nursery place or a childminder from the first birthday and — new since 1 August 2026 — all-day care for children who start Year 1 from the 2026/2027 school year. It gives the start date, the hours needed and the places already tried, and asks for confirmation of receipt and a written decision. The dated letter is the proof that counts if no place is found. In German, ready to print, sign and hand in.
Notifying the employer of sickness (Germany)
The written notice of sickness an employee in Germany gives the employer under § 5 of the Continued Remuneration Act (EntgFG): that they are unfit for work and for how long, with no diagnosis. For people with statutory health insurance it reflects the electronic sick note (eAU) — the employer fetches the certificate from the health insurer, but the employee must still report the absence at once. Those insured privately announce a paper certificate. In German, with a box for an address abroad.
Resignation letter (Germany)
A German resignation letter (Eigenkündigung): ordinary notice ending your employment on the date you choose, or else on the next possible date, asking for confirmation of receipt, a full employment reference (qualifiziertes Arbeitszeugnis) and for remaining leave to be granted or paid out. Under § 623 of the German Civil Code (BGB), notice ending employment is valid only on paper signed by hand — e-mail, fax, scans and every other electronic form are void. In German, to print, sign and hand over with proof of delivery.
Notice of a car sale to the motor insurer (Germany)
A letter telling your motor insurer in Germany that you have sold the car, as § 97 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG) requires without delay: the vehicle, plate, policy number, date and hour of handover, and the buyer's name and address. The policy passes to the buyer with the car (§ 95 VVG); without the notice the insurer may be free from liability for later losses. It asks for a final account, the refund of any credit and confirmation of receipt. In German, to send by post or as a PDF by e-mail.
Objection to a traffic fine notice (Germany)
A letter objecting to a German fine notice (Bußgeldbescheid) for a traffic offence, sent to the fines office that issued it: with the file reference, the date of the notice and the date it was served, against the notice in full or only against the penalty, with a request to inspect the file, and with or without reasons. Under § 67 of the German Administrative Offences Act (OWiG), the objection must reach the authority within two weeks of service, and a plain e-mail does not count. If the case goes to court, the court may also raise the fine. In German, ready to print and sign.
Private used car sale contract (Germany)
A contract for selling a used car or motorcycle between private individuals in Germany, under the German Civil Code (BGB). The exclusion of liability for defects is worded the way German courts uphold it: it does not cover fraud or a guarantee (§ 444 BGB), nor the seller's statements on mileage, accident damage, previous keepers and known defects, which stand in a section of their own. It also records the check of the registration certificate Part II, the date and hour of handover, retention of title, re-registration and the notice of sale. In German, for both parties to print and sign.
Employee's reply to a formal warning (Germany)
An employee's written reply to an employer's formal warning (Abmahnung) in Germany, to be added to the personnel file under § 83(2) of the German Works Constitution Act (BetrVG). It names the allegation, sets out the facts as the employee sees them, lists witnesses and asks either for the unjustified warning to be removed from the file or for the reply to be filed with it. There is no deadline and no duty to reply, but what is written can be used later. In German, to print, sign and hand over against a receipt.
Inventory of the spouses' starting assets (Germany)
A joint list, drawn up by both spouses in Germany, of what each owned and owed on the wedding day, plus inheritances and gifts received during the marriage, with values. Under § 1377 of the German Civil Code (BGB), an inventory the spouses draw up together, dated and signed by both, is presumed correct between them; without one, everything a spouse owns at the end is presumed to be gain when the gains are equalised on divorce. No notary needed. Separate property or another regime needs a notarised marriage contract, which this is not. In German.
Cancelling motor insurance (Germany)
A letter cancelling your German motor insurance with your current insurer: at the end of the insurance year, early after a premium increase or a claim, or after buying a used vehicle whose policy passed to you (§ 96 of the German Insurance Contract Act, VVG). For all cover or for the comprehensive cover only, asking the insurer to confirm the end date and refund any unused premium. For most policies, a cancellation for 31 December must reach the insurer by 30 November. In German, ready to send.
Cohabitation agreement for unmarried couples (Germany)
An agreement for an unmarried couple living together in Germany: who owns or rents the home and who moves out after a separation, how household costs are shared, a list of who owns what, how joint purchases and debts are divided if they split up, and pointers to a health-care power of attorney and separate wills. German law has no property regime for unmarried couples. This agreement needs no notary because it deliberately leaves out land and promises of gifts (§§ 311b and 518 of the German Civil Code, BGB). In German.
Request to reduce income tax advance payments (Germany)
Your request to the German tax office (Finanzamt) to bring the quarterly income tax advance payments into line with lower income under § 37(3) of the German Income Tax Act (EStG) — after fewer orders, higher business costs, parental leave, illness or the end of an activity. The letter gives the year, the current and the requested payment and the expected income, explains the change, covers the solidarity surcharge and church tax, and asks for overpaid amounts to be refunded. For the self-employed, freelancers and landlords. In German.
Claim to an employer for unpaid wages and overtime (Germany)
A letter claiming unpaid wages, salary or overtime pay from an employer in Germany, sent in time to beat the exclusion period (Ausschlussfrist) in the employment contract or collective agreement, which is often only three months from the due date. It lists month, type of claim and gross amount, sets a payment deadline, claims default interest under § 288(1) of the German Civil Code (BGB), backs overtime with the employee's own records and can announce that work will be withheld. In German, to print, sign by hand and deliver with proof of receipt, and to e-mail as well.
Contact arrangement for separated parents (Germany)
A written agreement between separated parents in Germany on the children's contact with the parent they do not live with: regular times, school holidays, public holidays and birthdays, pick-up and return, make-up dates, phone and video contact, information and trips abroad. Before you buy: a private contact agreement cannot be enforced in Germany. It becomes enforceable only when the family court approves it as a settlement (§ 156(2) of the Family Proceedings Act, FamFG); this agreement can serve as the basis for that, or for a settlement reached with the help of the youth welfare office (Jugendamt). In German.
Application for a tax clearance certificate (Germany)
Your application to the German tax office (Finanzamt) for a certificate on your tax affairs (Bescheinigung in Steuersachen), often called a tax clearance certificate — asked for in public tenders, for a restaurant licence and other trade permits, and by banks. It shows whether any tax is in arrears and whether returns have been filed, as at the day it is issued. The letter gives the tax number, the purpose and the date by which you need the certificate. No official form is required; post it or send it through ELSTER. In German.
Accident claim to the other driver's motor liability insurer (Germany)
The first claim after a road accident someone else caused, sent straight to their German motor liability insurer: the date, time and place, the other vehicle's plate, your vehicle, what happened, the damage, the police and witnesses, the amount quantified so far and your IBAN, with a request to confirm liability in principle. Under § 115 of the German Insurance Contract Act (VVG) you have a direct claim against the insurer, and you must notify it in text form within two weeks (§ 119 VVG) — a letter or an e-mail will do. In German.
Revocation of a power of attorney with notice to third parties (Germany)
Revoking a power of attorney in Germany: a letter to the agent asking for the power of attorney document back (§ 175 of the German Civil Code, BGB), which doubles as the notice to the bank, office or other body the power was shown or announced to — each receives a signed copy, because towards them the power stays in force until they are told it has ended (§§ 170–173 BGB). With the court route for declaring an unreturned document void (§ 176 BGB). In German; fill in, print, sign and deliver to each recipient with proof of receipt.
Power of attorney for a single matter (Germany)
A power of attorney for one matter in Germany — collecting a document, registering or deregistering a car, handing over a flat, attending an appointment at an office. With the principal and the agent, the matter described precisely, any limits, an expiry date, the return of the document and a specimen of the agent's signature. Under the German Civil Code (BGB) a power of attorney needs no particular form, but the land registry, the commercial register or disclaiming an inheritance require a publicly certified signature. In German; fill in, print, sign by hand and hand over the original.
Agreement to lend a car, with authorisation to drive (Germany)
An agreement for lending your car in Germany to someone else, such as family or friends, with an authorisation to drive it, including abroad. It records the check of the driving licence (§ 21 of the German Road Traffic Act, StVG), the insurance and whether the driver is covered, the period, purpose and permitted countries, and sets out who pays for fuel, tolls, fines, damage, the insurance excess and any loss of no-claims discount. The authorisation at the end, with a short English summary, serves as proof at checks. In German, to print and sign.
General power of attorney for financial affairs (Germany)
The German Federal Ministry of Justice publishes a free model only for the lasting power of attorney, which also covers health and residence; this general power of attorney (Generalvollmacht) is our own wording for your property alone. It takes effect on signature, without conditions: your attorney represents you with banks, contracting parties, authorities and courts in all financial matters, and it continues if you later lose capacity. You choose whether it outlasts your death and whether self-dealing (§ 181 of the German Civil Code, BGB) and sub-delegation are allowed. In German, to sign by hand.
Revocation of the waiver of the small-business VAT scheme (Germany)
The letter to the German tax office (Finanzamt) that returns a business to the small-business scheme of § 19 of the German VAT Act (UStG) after it had waived the scheme and charged VAT. The waiver binds for at least five calendar years and can then be revoked only from the start of a later calendar year. The letter names the year of the waiver and the year from which the scheme should apply again, and states that turnover stays within the €25,000 and €100,000 limits. Germany has no ‘VAT deregistration’: this is the route. In German.
Reply to a hearing form or witness questionnaire after a traffic offence (Germany)
The reply to the German fines authority on a hearing form (Anhörungsbogen), sent because you are accused of a traffic offence, or a witness questionnaire (Zeugenfragebogen), sent because the vehicle is registered to you. It gives the personal details the law requires and, on the facts, your choice: no statement, a statement only after inspecting the file, a declaration that you were not driving, or reliance on the right of witnesses to refuse to testify or answer (§§ 52 and 55 of the German Code of Criminal Procedure, StPO). Nobody has to incriminate themselves or a close relative, and the letter names no driver. In German.
Request to reduce working hours: part-time or bridging part-time (Germany)
An employee's request in Germany to cut working hours, permanently under § 8 of the Part-Time and Fixed-Term Employment Act (TzBfG) or for one to five years as bridging part-time under § 9a TzBfG, with current and desired weekly hours, the start date, the end date for bridging part-time and the preferred spread over the week. It reaches the employer in text form at least three months before the start; unless the employer refuses in text form a month before, the hours are reduced as asked. Requires over six months' service and over 15 employees (over 45 for bridging part-time). In German.
Power of attorney for vehicle registration matters (Germany)
A power of attorney for the vehicle registration office in Germany (Zulassungsstelle): it lets someone else register a car for you, re-register it after a change of keeper, deregister it or change your address in the papers. It names the principal and the representative with dates of birth and addresses, the vehicle with its VIN and plate, the eVB insurance number and the matter, and is limited to that matter. Many registration offices offer their own form free; check your office's document list. In German, to print and sign by hand.
Unpaid leave request (Germany)
A request to a German employer for unpaid special leave (unbezahlter Sonderurlaub) over set dates, giving the reason and the terms both sides agree: release from work without pay, the employment continuing, and a return on the same terms. There is no general statutory right to it, so the leave exists only once the employer agrees, and the document has room below for that consent. It points out that social insurance cover continues for one month at most (§ 7(3) of the German Social Code, Book IV, SGB IV), after which health insurance must be arranged. In German.
