Common questions
- Does Swiss law set a notice period for cancelling a phone contract in Ticino?
- No: notice periods and minimum terms are set by the contract and the provider's terms. Minimum terms of 12 or 24 months are common, often tied to a discounted phone, and notice periods of one to three months; some providers have neither. Cancelling before the minimum term ends usually means paying the fees up to its end. Check the period in your customer account or contract papers and post the notice in good time.
- Should I cancel myself before porting my Swiss mobile number to a new provider?
- Usually not. You ask the new provider, not the old one, to port the number. Check whether the new provider ends the old contract for you as part of the transfer: if it does, you do not need this letter, and cancelling yourself before the transfer can lose you the number. The old contract's remaining minimum term and notice period still apply.
- Who can help if a Swiss provider refuses my cancellation or keeps billing me?
- First the provider, in writing, with a copy of your notice and the registered-post receipt: ombudscom, the telecom conciliation body, expects you to have tried to agree. If that fails, ombudscom mediates between customers and providers before any court; the customer pays CHF 20 for the examination of the case. An automatic renewal hidden in the small print can be unfair (Art. 8 LCSl/UWG). In Ticino the consumer association ACSI advises its members through InfoConsumi.
