Cancelling a phone, internet or TV contract (Romania)

How long can the initial term of a phone or internet contract in Romania be?

At most 24 months for consumers, and the provider must also offer a contract of at most 12 months (Emergency Ordinance no. 111/2011 on electronic communications, as amended by Law no. 198/2022).

Can the contract be ended without penalties?

Yes, once the initial term is over — at any time, with at most a month's notice — and when the provider changes the contract terms unilaterally, if the contract is ended within the time given in the notice of the change, at least 30 days. The exceptions are changes solely in the subscriber's favour, purely administrative changes with no negative effect on them, and changes required by law. Before the initial term ends, the compensation set in the contract may be due.

What happens to the router and decoder when the contract ends?

They go back to the provider, usually within the time and at the place set in the contract; otherwise the provider may charge for them. Return them against a handover note or with proof of handing them to a courier, so that no bill for equipment follows.
