How long is parental leave in Poland and how do parents share it?

41 weeks for one child and 43 weeks for more than one (art. 179¹ of the Labour Code). Of that, 9 weeks belong to each parent alone and cannot be transferred — if the other parent does not take them, they are lost. The leave can be taken at once or in parts until the end of the calendar year in which the child turns 6.

When should the parental leave request be made?

At least 21 days before the leave starts, on paper or electronically. If the mother applies for the whole of maternity and parental leave within 21 days of giving birth, the benefit for the entire period is 81.5% of the base; otherwise parental leave is paid at 70%, and the weeks reserved for the other parent always at 70%.

Can one work during parental leave?

Yes, by combining the leave with work for one's own employer at no more than half-time — on a request made at least 21 days before starting work, which the employer grants unless the organisation or type of work makes it impossible. The leave is then extended in proportion to the working time.
