Common questions

What must a reference from a Liechtenstein employer contain?
A full reference states the kind and length of the employment and assesses your performance and conduct (§ 1173a Art. 36 para. 1 ABGB); you may ask for it at any time, also as an interim reference while still employed. On your express request it states only kind and length (Art. 36 para. 2). The rule is taken from Swiss law, so Swiss practice on clear, goodwill wording is often followed.
Where do I go in Liechtenstein if my employer refuses to correct a reference?
To the Princely Court of Justice (Landgericht) in Vaduz, which hears all first-instance civil cases; no conciliation step is required first, though a voluntary settlement hearing can be requested (§ 227 ZPO). The court works in German, so use the German version of this letter there, and enclose the reference and your evidence.
Is there a deadline for a Liechtenstein employer to provide a reference?
The law sets none: the reference is owed as soon as you ask. The letter sets a date by which you expect it, signed; two to three weeks is a usual frame. If nothing arrives, send a short reminder with a final date before turning to the court.
